Marc likes to say that much of his work is about nothing, however, it is here that the series manages to extract it’s own meaning. By being about nothing, it is about everything. It methodically riffs on the nature of reality, who can reach enlightenment (and how they can or should go about doing it), the ridiculousness of our current society, and the trippy uneasiness that accompanies participating in quotidian reality. By stepping back and refusing to take itself too seriously, it becomes a top notch parody and underrated gem.
I have spoken with artist Brian Pollett before and i am still fascinated by the concept of his Binge series. Over a set course of days, Brian consumes various drugs and creates pieces that attempt to represent elements of each particular substance. It's a very underrated concept in my opinion and manages to showcase both Brian's virtuoso talent, as well as his incredible ability to translate these spaces into reality for us to admire without being pretentious.
Ifetayo Harvey of the Drug Policy Alliance has been fighting against the injustice and discrimination found in many of the practices propagated by the perpetual War on Drugs. In our first interview, she told her story about how this war impacted her and her family. She recently wrote a fascinating article for Psymposia about why the psychedelic community is so white and what this says about the culture of drug use.
Marc Marcel is an Artist, Author, and Poet representing Baltimore, Maryland. I discovered his work some time ago (circa 2013 by way of this video.) after some of my first experiences with psychedelics and was fascinated by his commentary on the nature of reality and what it means to be human.
He explores these themes with his outstanding poetry and in his magnificent, The Book That Doesn't Even Matter. It within this space of examining humanity, he has elevated himself and everyone who has been lucky enough to experience his work.
The Sunshine Makers examines the life and times of Nicholas Sand and Robert Timothy Scully, the masterminds behind the mythical "Orange Sunshine", a brand of LSD that is still heralded as the purest and to achieve mainstream notoriety. Nick and Tim were directly responsible for much of the LSD that was in circulation during that time and found themselves in the crosshairs of what would eventually fester into what we now know as The War on Drugs.
Synthesist Greg Kyryluk (Alpha Wave Movement/Within Reason) releases Cerulean Skies an introspective ambient project. This is another entry into Greg's outstanding and storied catalogue of Berlin School inspired electronica.
L.A.Z of Clear Soul Forces releases the first video for his upcoming No Paperwork E.P.
Cellist and composer David Teie has been sparking conversation since the announcement of his project Music for Cats. By creating what has been dubbed species-specific music, David has composed ambient-esque tracks targeted towards cats in an attempt to provide enrichment to our feline friends. Using his knowledge of music theory and composition coupled with research data acquired from the University of Wisconsin's Charles Snowdon, David has successfully incorporated feline vocalizations and pitches into this project to create his own genre.
I saw Jordan Peele’s magnificent “Get Out” this weekend and was blown away by it’s powerful racial commentary as well it’s unique probing of the human psyche. While the racial component definitely makes for some poignant discussion, for this brief analysis, I will try to focus more on what I believe “The Sunken Place” is as it has some interesting implications.
On February 19th, 2013 the decomposing body of twenty-one year old college student Elisa Lam was found inside of a water tank atop Los Angeles’ Cecil Hotel. After guests staying at the hotel reported foul tasting, blackish-brown water coming from their faucets, hotel staff were propelled to locate the source of the ill-tasting water and upon inspection, they discovered her remains.
On December 15th, 1967 in Point Pleasant, West Virginia the town’s Silver Bridge collapsed killing 46 people and forever changing the landscape of extraterrestrial and cryptozoological study. Leading up to the collapse of the bridge, residents of the small town reported seeing a strange, bipedal, winged cryptid that stood about seven feet tall and had a massive wingspan. Couples that visited the Lover’s Lane style hangout spots on the outskirts of the town had encounters with the creature and described it as blindingly fast and possessing horrible red eyes. Due to it’s moth-like appearance the creature was eventually given the name Mothman.

Steven has been dubbed "The Fire Artist" (even collaborating with the iconic Zippo lighter brand) as a result of his proficiency in this style of composition. Many see the almost ethereal nature of his gorgeous works as far more than just some simple novelty. Some of history's greatest surrealists like Salvador Dali (one of Steven's inspirations) have dabbled in fumage and the results are momentous representations of the legitimacy of the technique.
