Lebanese artist and poet Hiba Sobh is using poetry as a means to nurture her creative and spiritual needs. She recently released Odyssey, a compilation featuring various pieces on beauty, life, and love.
Hiba's work delves into the many facets of the human experience and attempts to explore these realms with her diction. Inspired and motivated by the rich beauty and culture of Lebanon, she has continued to hone her skills putting together a variety of diverse poems.
In this interview, we discuss her work, Lebanon, and motivations for pursuing art.
Prox: Tell us about yourself. Where did you grow up and how did you get into poetry?
Hiba: I grew up in the heart of Beirut, Lebanon, poetry grew to become a natural part of my being, as the sapling that becomes the tree, I write poetry because I am inspired by the deep desire to release the unseen worlds within.
Prox: How has Lebanon contributed to how and what you write about?
Hiba: I live by the ocean, Lebanon is a seaside country, my poetry always speaks about water and the waves because I live and breathe the Mediterranean Sea.
Prox: Is there one particular poem that you think best describes what you’re trying to say with your work within the book?
Hiba: To be honest, there is no specific poem, Odyssey is an endless tide of emotions, colours, and beauty, there is no one way to describe the poem of the heart.
Prox: What is it about poetry that brings out your creative potential? Do you partake in any other forms of artistic expression?
Hiba: Personally, I believe poetry allows expression in ways common language cannot bring, then again, a poet does not truly call themselves a poet, rather, their words come not from their lips, but rather from their senses, from the depths of the heart and the breath of the spirit, a man is not a writer because the words have already been written from within. As well as being a poet, I am an artist, and art, in it’s own way, is visual poetry, the online store for my artwork is currently available on Etsy.
Prox: How has writing improved your relationship with your inner-self and the people around you? Have you felt an increased need for spiritual pursuits since you began?
Hiba: Poetry has allowed me to heal the self, the body, and the soul, because of poetry, I meditate more than ever, allowing me to let go, so when I become the silence, I surrender my heart, and rivers become the one ocean. Through my poetry, I become open in sharing a spiritual message, for a thousand people become the one face of love.
Prox: For you personally, what does poetry say about the world that other mediums can’t?
Hiba: Poetry allows people to awaken to what was once unseen through unconventional ways, poetry can speak through metaphors, allegories, themes, it reveals the hidden meaning, the unveiling of a thousand layers reveals the rose.
Prox: Tell us something about yourself that we may not know that influences your work.
Hiba: Music is the main inspiration of my poetry, I especially deeply enjoy listening to ambient music while writing, though I love and enjoy all forms of music.
Prox: Who are some of your favorite artists, business people, creatives or intellectuals?
Hiba: I deeply love the works of Rumi, Gibran Kahlil Gibran, and Paulo Coehlo.
Prox: Favorite Hobbies?
Hiba: I deeply enjoy relaxing at home with a cup of tea, reading a good book, as well as taking clear walks in forests and nature, I enjoy writing and reading poetry, and taking long walks on the beach, hearing the mystical sounds of waves crashing into my soul.
Prox: Tips for aspiring authors and poets?
Hiba: When you write, surrender all your mind, heart, and soul, and never look back.
Prox: Information on upcoming projects and releases?
Hiba: I am currently working on a new release, coming in 2017.
Prox: Final Thoughts?
Hiba: Thank you to Prox Centauri for this lovely interview, and to all you beautiful souls out there, you are forever gold, keep shining on.
